| | In 1998, Ty Schenzel responded to a plea from the football coach of the now-closed Father Flanagan High School, begging for community support at his team’s games. This small request ignited a passion and sense of purpose within the Hope Center’s executive director to create an organization that offered Omaha’s inner-city youth a safe alternative to life on the streets. Originally, the Hope Center was just an afterschool center where youth could drop in to hang out or shoot hoops. In recent years, the Hope Center has developed structured, innovative programs that promote personal and academic success for every member. We have expanded to include a 20,000 square foot skate rink and are home to the largest Kids Café program in the state, providing over 26,000 hot meals this year. Through our after school and summer programs and Hope Skate, we currently serve more than 600 local youth a week.
Studies show that from 3:00-6:00 p.m., juveniles are most likely to perpetuate or become victims of violent crime, smoke, drink, use drugs, and be in/cause a car accident. Forty percent of all crimes committed by juveniles occur during this time frame. Youth ages 10 to 16 who have a relationship with a mentor are 46 percent less likely to start using drugs and 27 percent less likely to start drinking alcohol. The Hope Center offers educational support, mentoring, social skills training, bible studies, job creation and economic development. We strive every day to break the cycle of generational hopelessness for Omaha’s inner-city youth that has been imbedded in many of those living in North Omaha. The Hope Center for Kids believes every child deserves hope for a better life. Our programs and services empower them to overcome these obstacles and make a positive impact in their own lives and in their community.
