| | Pearl Ball, an elegant, intimate, black-tie event, is one of the oldest and most exclusive galas in Houston. The evening, chaired by Joella and Steve Mach, features dinner and dancing (without live or silent auctions) will be held at River Oaks Country Club on Thursday, February 10, 2011. All proceeds provide scholarships for nursing students. Many established Houston families have supported Good Samaritan Foundation for three generations and like to attend the event together and be seated as families. Many ladies enjoy wearing their pearls to the event.
The first Pearl Ball, benefiting the nursing scholarship fund of Good Samaritan Foundation, was held in 1989 at River Oaks Country Club. The late Vivian Smith served as Honorary Chairman. Mrs. Smith’s connection with Good Samaritan Foundation dated back to 1951, when her husband, R.E. “Bob” Smith, joined with other prominent Houstonians to establish the organization. The gala was named the “Pearl Ball” in reference to a string of black pearls that was one of the first gifts Mr. Smith gave his wife. In twenty-two memorable years, the Pearl Ball has raised more than $4.3 million for nurse education in Texas.
Good nurses are critical to the health and well-being of any community. They help our friends and family in emergency rooms, school-based clinics, homeless shelters, and private homes. They serve as caregivers, clinical instructors, mentors, researchers, and volunteers. Every day, nurses offer their compassion and crucial contribution to health care.
Our nurses are the lifeblood of our hospitals. Unfortunately, many talented, eager, and qualified people are discouraged from entering the nursing profession due to financial limitations. Good Samaritan Foundation addresses this need by providing scholarships to student nurses for their clinical nursing studies. The Foundation is committed to alleviating the nursing shortage and has given almost $15 million to more than 14,000 student nurses since it began in 1951.
Please partner with us by underwriting a table at one of the following levels: presenting underwriter tables are $50,000; major underwriter tables are $25,000; underwriter tables are $15,000; benefactor tables are $10,000; and sponsor tables are $5,000. All tables seat 10, and payment may be made either this year or next. We will highlight your participation on the invitation and in the event program.
After successful feedback from our introduction in 2010, we are once again offering the “Invite a Nurse” opportunity (at no additional cost to you) to invite one or two nurse experts to sit at your table and offer relevant discussion and insight about current nursing and medical issues. When you check the “Invite a Nurse” option on the reply form, Good Samaritan Foundation will underwrite the cost for the nurses to attend the Pearl Ball, and your table will increase from a table of ten to a table of eleven or twelve.
Together, we can improve the quality of health care here and throughout Texas.
About Good Samaritan Foundation
Since its founding in 1951 by the Reverend Clyde Verheyden and six prominent Houstonians, Claud B. Barrett, William Hamlet Blades, Curtis B. Delhomme, J. W. Donaldson, Walter L. Goldston, and R. E. “Bob” Smith, Good Samaritan Foundation has been solely dedicated to nurses and the nursing profession. As the State’s largest nurse scholarship program, Good Samaritan Foundation has granted more than $15 million to over 14,000 students enrolled in nurse education and provides support for LVN to doctoral students. The Foundation seeks excellence in nursing by increasing the profile of nursing; attracting new young people to the field; alleviating the severe shortage of qualified nurses and nurse faculty by granting scholarships directly to students; supporting innovative nursing school faculty programs; and encouraging increased collaboration among the hospitals, nursing schools, and the Greater Houston community.
